Timeless Masterpieces: The Art of Jaquet Droz Watches

For over 280 years, Jaquet Droz has been a name synonymous with horological excellence, blending mechanical ingenuity with artistic craftsmanship. Founded in 1738 by Pierre Jaquet-Droz, this Swiss luxury watchmaker has been at the forefront of innovation, particularly in automata, minute repeaters, and haute horlogerie. Today, Jaquet Droz continues to honor its heritage by creating exceptional timepieces that merge tradition with modernity.
The Legacy of Pierre Jaquet-Droz
Pierre Jaquet-Droz was born in 1721 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, a region known for its rich watchmaking tradition. From an early age, he displayed an exceptional talent for mechanics and precision. In 1738, he founded his own workshop, focusing on producing highly accurate longcase clocks equipped with sophisticated movements.
Jaquet-Droz soon realized that the artistic aspect of watchmaking could be as important as mechanical precision. By incorporating music, animation, and elaborate decorations into his timepieces, he attracted the attention of European royalty and nobility. His work became so renowned that he was invited to present his creations to King Ferdinand VI of Spain, where he successfully sold several luxury clocks, allowing him to expand his business.
The Golden Age of Automata
During the late 18th century, Jaquet-Droz revolutionized watchmaking with his automata—mechanical devices designed to mimic human and animal movements. Some of his most famous automata include:
The Writer (1774) – A mechanical doll capable of writing full sentences with a quill.
The Musician – A lifelike automaton that played a miniature organ.
The Draughtsman – A child automaton that could sketch different drawings.
These creations stunned audiences across Europe, China, and the Ottoman Empire, reinforcing Jaquet Droz’s reputation as a true pioneer. His automata were considered precursors to modern robotics, showcasing the brand’s ability to blend watchmaking with kinetic art.
Expansion into China and Global Influence
One of Jaquet Droz’s most remarkable achievements was becoming one of the first Western watchmakers to enter the Chinese market. In the 18th century, the Qing Dynasty had a fascination with intricate mechanical objects, and Jaquet Droz’s elaborate watches and automata became highly sought after at the imperial court. His creations were often adorned with precious materials, intricate enamel work, and mechanical animations, making them status symbols for Chinese elites.
By the late 1700s, Jaquet Droz timepieces were being sold in major capitals such as Paris, London, Geneva, and Beijing, solidifying the brand’s position as one of the most prestigious watchmakers of the era.
Masterpieces of Jaquet Droz
Pieces that pay homage to snakes are rarities. Today, Jaquet Droz is unveiling two unique interpretations for the next Chinese astrological year: one with a mother-of-pearl dial and one on a Sonora Sunrise mineral dial.

The solid gold curved body of a serpent is enamelled in graduated colours punctuated by a motif designed by John Howe; the creator of artwork for the Lord of the Rings novels.
Certain animals have imposing forms. Others demonstrate more softness. This is the case for the snake, under whose sign the 2025 Chinese astrological year will occur. Master craftsmanship has been taken to an unprecedented level to create two unique interpretations without any hands.
“Create your own, as unique as you are”
The unique Parrot Repeater pocket watch represents the entire spectrum of Jaquet Droz craftsmanship in a single pocket watch, with watchmaking skill showcased alongside decorative techniques.

A true work of art, it depicts an animated naturalist scene. The birds that take center stage here are a beloved motif for Jaquet Droz, admired for their romance as much as their song.
At the heart of the composition, a pair of Macaws chosen for their beauty and colorful plumage watch over their two chicks. Each of the five macaws is animated: the bird on the left hand side moves its entire body; its partner on the right wiggles its head and wings. One chick is hatching from its egg while the other chicks hop back and forth.
The Parrot Repeater case made up of two covers has been sculpted, painted, covered in “Grand Feu” enamel and coated in a rainbow of precious stones (yellow diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pink, yellow and blue sapphires). This exceptional one-of-a-kind piece, Numerus Clausus 1/1, represents the entire spectrum of Jaquet Droz craftsmanship in a single pocket watch.
Watchmaking skills are showcased alongside decorative techniques. The Parrot Repeater Pocket Watch carries on the long tradition of automata originally established by Pierre Jaquet-Droz, spurring it today to push new technical, creative and artistic boundaries.
The Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red limited series in petrified wood is a dance of chromatic unison. The autumnal hues of the stone blend with the warmth of the 18-carat red gold. Each of these one-of-a-kind timepieces has a slightly different mineral dial, a full glimpse into the exquisite workmanship of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art and the art of astonishment created in 1738.

Jaquet Droz unveils new exclusive and unique Loving Butterfly Automaton devoted to Opal.
This one-of-a-kind automaton presents a dial made of precious Opal and a center in white mother-of-pearl.
At the bottom of the dial, love reigns supreme, set in motion, embodied by a chariot driven by Cupid and pulled along by a butterfly. This lyrical scene bordered by a wooded backdrop is the fruit of the dexterity of Jaquet Droz’s craftsmen who carved and sculpted it in white gold.

The artful Loving Butterfly Automaton complication breathes life into an animated nature scene. The butterfly’s wings flutter in time, placed close against the sapphire crystal to make it seem like the butterfly is about to break free and fly out of the scenery. Even the wheels on the chariot turn, but not all of the spokes rotate, which creates an optical illusion that Pierre Jaquet-Droz began using nearly three centuries ago.
The figures are surrounded by a gold backdrop entirely crafted by hand. Each tree spans a mere 0.2 mm – its slender grooves carved one by one using purpose-designed tools– and is individually placed in its very own setting.

“Just one look can make a difference”. The common saying, often used for feelings of love, also holds true for art. Jaquet Droz has been inspired by this expression for its two new creations Petite Heure Minute Tiger. Through one single piece available in two variations, the brand has united the essence of its watchmaking and artistic expertise.

A luxurious animated composition, the Magic Lotus Automaton draws the observer into the serene contemplation of a Zen garden. The exquisitely detailed plants and animals are created by the very finest artisans.
The mobile disc that forms the dial displays two truly exceptional animations. The first is represented by a Koi carp which, with a flick of the tail, appears to move through the water, and the second by a floating lotus flower.

The latter is equipped with an innovative movement that allows it to display a new jewel with each rotation, invisibly changing between a blue sapphire, yellow sapphire, and ruby. The automaton movement's power reserve is symbolized by a hand-painted dragonfly in sculpted gold located between 8 and 9 o'clock.
