Anna Sui SPRING 2025 READY-TO-WEAR
Anna Sui is bringing a touch of vintage charm to the upcoming Spring season, drawing inspiration from the pre-Pop art of Andy Warhol and the glamorous vacation style of the 1960s. Her latest collection is a delightful blend of soft pastels, whimsical prints, and retro silhouettes, capturing the spirit of a bygone era with a modern twist.
Sui's mood board, always a vibrant tapestry of references, this time revolves around Warhol's early commercial art.
"I wanted to do something really soft, and I've always loved his pre-Pop drawings," she explains.
These influences are evident in the collection's pastel palette and playful prints, with artist Paul LeRoy Gehres, whose work echoes Warhol's style, creating a charming cherub logo motif that adorns shrunken '90s tees. A new printing technique evokes the blurred outlines of Warhol's illustrations, adding a touch of nostalgia to a delicate lace slip dress.
Travel, resorts, and country clubs also played a role in Sui's design process. Think of those iconic vacation photos of your mother or grandmother at the beach in the 60s - that's the vibe she's capturing. The collection features terry lounge sets, A-line micro-shifts in vibrant jacquards and floral piqués, souvenir print silk-cotton voile pajamas, cardigans reminiscent of Dean Martin's style, and bejeweled cat-eye sunglasses. Even the ruffled pastel tulle prom dresses offer a sweet alternative to the overly mature styles popular with high schoolers today.
Sui's niece, actress Chase Sui Wonders, aptly summed up the collection's essence: "Auntie Anna, it's like the opposite of brat, it's so earnest, it's demure." And indeed, Sui's Spring collection is a refreshing departure from the often edgy and provocative trends of today, offering a charming and nostalgic escape for the fashion-conscious.
“Sally Go’ Round the Roses” by The Jaynetts (1963) was a song that Andy Warhol would listen to Over & Over again while painting. I drew my inspiration from a compilation of his Pre-pop drawings, sketches and the watercolors. I love his line quality and the whimsey of his Cherubs, ice cream, and cakes. Keeping this pre-pop period in mind, I looked at a lot of photos of the 1960’s Girl Groups and how they dressed and styled themselves. Inspired by Bridget Bardot Glamour and Country club style, I wanted my Spring collection to have Charm and Playful Demure, capturing the spirit of the early 1960s while infusing it with a modern casualness. The blend of preppy ginghams, colorful terry, and whimsical travel prints. Pointy Pastel Stiletto shoes, Petticoats skirts, and Tulle party dresses."- Anna Sui.
