6 wedding accessory trends that will adorn 2022
In 2022, it seems like brides are ready to up the ante. The preferred gowns of next season come in saccharine pastels and drip metallic embellishments—floral arrangements too will be bold, blue hydrangeas set off against orange poppies.
As weddings emerge from their two-year hibernation, couples have set their eyes on drama, in a big way—and when it comes to accessorising?
Well, it’s the simplest way to turn up the volume.
For Kyha Scott, founder and creative director of bridal labels Kyha Studios and Chosen by Kyha, maximalism will be the driving force of 2022.
“We’re seeing brides in more layered pieces—swathes of tulle or fuller skirts, but all with a modern edge,” Scott shares with the magazine.
“Bolder colour choices will also trend as brides seek to stand apart, and express their individuality.” Perhaps more unexpectedly, however, is the return of what Scott calls “long-forgotten favourites”. Our love of all things nostalgic will have us reaching further back in time for bridal inspiration—not just to the aughts or ’90s, but to the early 19th century.
We will chat with Scott about the six veil and accessory trends she believes will shape the 2022 bridal season. Below, discover her wedding forecast.
Pearl detailing
“Gone are the days of tulle-only options. Over the last few years we have seen brides treat veils as an opportunity to make a style statement. In 2022, pearl detailing on veils will continue to reign supreme.” says Scott.
Crystals, however, are also on the horizon, which Scott believes will become increasingly popular—particularly as “embellished shoes and accessories dominate the runway”.
Birdcage veils
Not all brides, of course, will go the traditional route when it comes to veils and accessories—the more unorthodox in Scott’s forecast will opt for something that’s minimal in size, with maximal impact. “For cutting edge brides,” Scott predicts, “a full birdcage veil with distinctive detailing will be the fashion-forward choice in 2022.”
Statement earrings
“Bold will be big in 2022 and it starts with a statement earring,” says Scott. “Think long, linear pearl drops or crystal embellished fringe that brings the best of disco to today.” While the minimalist bride will opt for a more pared-back look, they might channel the same drama with a chunky gold hoop or necklace.
Chokers
Three-strand chokers of the kind Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid have been prying out of the Vivienne Westwood archive are only set to grow in popularity come 2022, as part of the Regency-slash-Rocococore obsession we’re navigating in the world of fashion. “
Chokers will make a comeback in bridal fashion in 2022,” Scott tells us, “with thick strings of pearls at choker length poised to set the trend.”
Gloves
Perhaps we can thank Pierpaolo Piccioli and Shona Rhimes’s Bridgerton in equal part for the re-emergence of opera gloves, which make their way next year from the realm of high fashion to bridalwear. “Gloves will have a bridal comeback in 2022 as an unexpected detail for brides looking for an editorial aesthetic,” says Scott.
Dramatic layering
In 2022, more is more—so much so that brides might bring along a separate skirt as an accessory for their nuptials. “Bridal layering is a new trend that will emerge for 2022, where tulle tops and overskirts can be layered with a gown to create a more dramatic ceremony look,” Scott advises.
